This year, education charity RHET has been sharing the story of dairy from gate to glass in a meaningful, creative and hands-on way. Over the course of the academic year RHET are offering learners many varied opportunities to find out more about the dairy industry in Scotland, both on farm and in the classroom.
From innovative learning resources to fun dairy-themed competitions—and even the chance to follow our very own RHET dairy cow, 991—there’s so much to explore!
Earlier this month, RHET delivered 14 brand-new Dairy Discovery Boxes to the network of regional project coordinators across Scotland which are packed with real industry props to share the dairy journey in class. The boxes which contain items like teat bottles, aprons, clusters, pedometers and giant ear tags have been generously provided by our many industry partners.
These boxes are already being used by our fantastic RHET volunteers as they go into schools, taking the Countryside to the Classroom, to talk to classes about how the dairy industry works. Pupils are experiencing firsthand what it’s like to wear milking aprons, feel the weight of pedometers, and dive into the world of dairy farming in a way that’s both fun and educational!
Hugh Myclymont RHET Board Chairman said "We are delighted to enhance learning with these fantastic dairy boxes. The support from industry partners in providing these resources is invaluable, and we truly appreciate their commitment to educating the next generation about Scotland’s dairy sector."
A huge thank you to Kedar Cheese, Carrs Billington, Peacock Technology, Shearwell Data, Fullwoodhead, McCaskies, Rumenco, John Maxwell, Netherwood Mains, and The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) for making this initiative possible.
Together, we’re ensuring that Scotland’s learners get a real taste of the countryside—without leaving the classroom!
