The Cow-to-Cone project is supporting development of a new data resource created by SRUC for Education Scotland to support the Higher Applications of Mathematics course. This resource is designed to equip the next generation of STEM learners and expand their knowledge of dairy farming.
The resource includes a dataset on production, environmental and economic data, based on data from the globally renowned Langhill dairy herd. The Langhill herd, based at SRUC’s Dairy Research and Innovation Centre, is renowned for being the longest running dairy genetics experiment in the world. A herd of 200 cows is split into 4 sub-herds dependent on the animal’s genetics (either high or average genetic merit) and their feeding regime (Diet 1 or Diet 2). The diets can range from comparisons of high energy vs standard energy to by-product vs homegrown diets, allowing an understanding the role diet and genetics plays on production levels of the animals
Practitioners and learners will explore real-life Scottish agricultural data using Excel and R to work through and understand the learning outcomes of the new Higher Apps course.
The Cow-to-Cone resource aims to engage learners with agriculture and milk and ice-cream manufacture by demonstrating variation in production chains stemming from different dairy management systems and the environmental effects of these.
We are delivering two training sessions on this new resource
