Scottish Borders Countryside Initiative are delighted to be warmly welcomed by The Hirsel Estate for two days, in both Spring and Autumn, to hold our Food and Farming days with a country estate twist. Pupils from Eyemouth, Jedburgh, Kelso and Berwickshire S2 year groups, move around six sessions covering arable, beef production/Highland cows, the river, the forestry, the role of the gamekeeper and have the chance to bake bread and taste pheasant in the field to fork kitchen. This wonderful event would not happen without The Hirsel staff and our amazing volunteers who give up their time to come and deliver the sessions. We are also really indebted to A Humes in Kelso who supply us with members of staff who act as guides, leading the groups around the estate.
Humes also support us with sales of a great charity recipe book and also from proceeds of their Christmas shopping Black Friday on online sales - have a look to finish off your Christmas shopping.

This year we also welcomed Charlotte from The Foodscape podcast to one of our days at the Hirsel and she thoroughly enjoyed her day with us.
“Who will produce our food tomorrow? Even though the agricultural sector is hugely diverse, technologically advanced, interesting and eternally relevant, many children in Scotland would be unaware of the career opportunities without guidance from fantastic organisations like RHET.
I followed RHET Scottish Borders for a day, as they introduced 100 students to the world of food and farming on the Hirsel estate. Whether participants choose to work in agriculture or not, learning more about where their food comes from is vital, and can change their life.”

Thanks to all for the support of the work RHET deliver in the Scottish Borders.
