RNCI are delighted to launch our 2022 Windowsill Garden Project. Teachers will be invited to apply for classroom growing packs in early February with packs being delivered before the Easter holidays.
The evaluation feedback from last year was incredible and we all felt it was important to run the project again this year. The project is an educational, hands on, fun activity that engages children of all levels within the school.
Each classroom pack includes 5 sets of seeds, trays and compost and can be grown on a sunny windowsill. The project not only educates children about growing food but can be used to educate them on how they can help the environment by recycling household items used for planting on the seedlings.
One teacher involved with a previous project said, "The children really enjoyed planting the seeds in little teams, taking turns to water them each day and watching/ tracking their growth. The peas, beans and radishes have now been planted out into our school garden and we look forward to harvesting them when the time comes! Thank you for the resources and helpful guidance."

RHET Dumfries & Galloway recently held a very successful Tractor Competition, with over 1500 pupils entering with their very own designs for a brand new tractor for Santa! Our judges, who were all from the local Young Farmers clubs had a hard time deciding on the overall winners, but a huge well done goes to Logan in P1 at Port William Primary, Abbey in P7 at Lochrutton Primary, Archie in P2 at Lincluden Primary, and Oliver in P3/4 at Hecklegirth Primary. These lucky winners are soon to have their prizes delivered to school by tractor, and they are treating their class to a visit to a RHET farm later in the year! A big thanks must go to D&G’s wonderful teachers who entered their classes and took the time to send them in. Look out for more competitions in the future!
As restrictions begin to ease RHET D&G will hopefully be out and about lots more… last term was busy with Farm Visits and spaces are filling up fast for the coming weeks. For any information on what we can offer, please email dumgal@rhet.org.uk. We will be delighted to share our Early Years Boxes with you; to assist with any food, farming or countryside related topics; or to help enhance your pupil’s learning through Classroom Talks or Farm Visits. We are also making tentative plans to hold a Food & Farming day later this academic year – restrictions permitting – so please keep an eye on our social media channels for those plans!
