Let’s get growing!

Suggested Participants – Primary 5/6/7 pupils

Growing in school is a simple way to engage pupils with food chains, lifecycles and practical growing activities. You don’t require a lot of space or any specialist tools and there are a range of plants and investigations you can deliver indoors although if you can get outside you should try to!

Learning outcomes:

  • We are learning about the flow of energy between plants and animals.

  • We are learning about the benefits of plants.

  • We are learning about the different stages in plant development.

Success Criteria:

  • I can recognise the role of plants in society.

  • I can discuss the life cycle of plants.

  • I can produce a Scottish food web with plants in it.

Experiences and Outcomes

  • SCN 2-02a I can use my knowledge of the interactions and energy flow between plants and animals in ecosystems, food chains and webs. I have contributed to the design or conservation of a wildlife area.

  • SCN 2-02b Through carrying out practical activities and investigations, I can show how plants have benefited society.

  • SCN 2-14a By investigating the life cycles of plants and animals, I can recognise the different stages of their development.

Learning for sustainability:

  • Goal 4 Quality education: achieve literacy and numeracy.
